class environment lab The Young Producers Program (YPP) aims to provide community youth with employment and life skills experiences that expose them to the challenges involved in working in today's rapidly growing high tech industries.

YPP students also gain exposure to the industry through field trips and workshops, and receive valuable technical training to support their professional development.

Phase I - Apprenticeship:
This phase focuses on giving the teenagers an overview of computer basics and an introduction to graphic design using Adobe Photoshop. It lasts ten weeks and a new session starts every quarter.

The training focuses on the following:

Understanding of Mac/PC platform
Moving files around on the desktop
Creating aliases
Storing and saving files on a floppy disk and on the network
Understanding memory and RAM
Knowledge of keyboard shortcuts Using computer accessories Understanding the concept of layout & design
Knowledge of proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast
Review and study design principles
Rules of word processing
Basic Adobe Photoshop
Ability to scan photos
Ability to conduct file compression Re sizing graphics
Basic Web Site Design and HTML
Basic Macromedia Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash
Introduction to Business Skills

Phase I also provides an introduction to Adobe Photoshop. Concentration lies on the following tasks: Editing images, Making selections, Using layers, Using the type tool, and Pasting selections.

Phase II - Junior Production Associate:
This phase consists of ongoing training for students who demonstrate they have the motivation to become part of the production team. As the production team works on projects for real clients, they receive training and mentorship from design professionals in Silicon Valley.

Recent Field Trips

The students recently visited a new college in Emeryville, CA called Ex'pression College for Digital Arts. They learned about 3-D computer animation, audio mixing + recording, and digital graphic design.


Accomplishments

Students showing their entry before winning the race for the 1998 Sand Hill Challenge high school division. They built their own car using 3-D modeling design software at Plugged In.
